Restaurante Colibrí in Oaxaca de Juárez offers a blend of traditional Oaxacan flavors alongside familiar Mexican favorites, creating a versatile dining experience that suits both locals and travelers passing through the city. Situated just across from the ADO bus terminal, it fills a convenient niche for breakfast and full meals alike, catering especially to those looking for a hearty and authentic taste right before heading out or after arriving in town.

The atmosphere leans into a retro diner vibe reminiscent of mid-20th-century American eateries, a style that sets it apart from typical regional restaurants. This creates a lively, slightly nostalgic backdrop, often complemented by live piano music on many days, adding a layer of approachable sophistication and making it a comfortable spot to settle in without feeling rushed. Despite some moments when the decor feels a bit worn, the space remains welcoming and practical, accommodating travelers with luggage and groups looking for a satisfying meal.

The menu covers a broad range of options from breakfast staples like chilaquiles rojos with scrambled eggs and various omelettes, to more elaborate plates such as carne tampiqueña and salmon with guajillo sauce. The consistent commentary on the freshness and quality of ingredients is clear, with sauces and main dishes drawing particular praise. Drinks like horchata and a modest wine selection round out the menu, offering balance to the rich, traditional flavors.

Service here stands out for its attentiveness and efficiency, important in a busy setting close to the bus terminal where people often pop in for a quick yet satisfying meal. The staff’s attentiveness extends to how guests are treated regardless of their arrival time or dress, creating an inclusive environment that avoids the stiffness sometimes found in more upscale places.

This restaurant is well-suited for visitors who appreciate genuine regional cuisine without the pretense, and for locals wanting a reliable spot that serves comfort food with an authentic soul. Breakfast or lunch are prime times to visit, particularly if you’re traveling and need a solid meal before hitting the road. While some find the tortillas a bit dry and the surroundings could refresh, the overall combination of flavor, service, and accessibility keeps Restaurante Colibrí as a practical and flavorful option in Oaxaca’s dining landscape.

Not cheap but a great breakfast in this very busy restaurant, a real haven opposite the ADO Terminal. Very quick efficient service in a sort of 60s USA Diner type of atmosphere. They allowed us in with large rucksacks and we had a great breakfast there. Would recommend it, but please note that we were offered sweet cakes in baskets when we sat down. We assumed that this was complimentary. We were wrong. They later charged us for the rolls. I suggested that they should have told us in advance that there would be a charge, but whether they change this practice, who knows? Even so, I would go back if in the area

The flavour was great, and the sauces were amazing. The tortillas were a little dry, which for the overall price shouldn't happen. Service is great. The looks of the place could use a little makeover since it looks outdated and sad.

Great place to eat a full restaurant menu. This place has true Oaxaca flavors with an added section of basic restaurant selections. But don’t be fooled by the options, they are all well made and flavorful. Food is made with quality ingredients. Service is top notch and you will be pleased with the ambiance. Most days there is live piano music. Accessible and close to many places in the city.

The enchiladas with swiss cheese are great. The cheese plate in the pics was also really good.

This is by far the best restaurant in Mexico. Hands down. I only went there because I had time to kill while waiting for my bus to Mexico City. I was not well dressed (but I should've been) and they treated me like a princess anyway. This food was so exquisitely prepared that I was shocked. I ordered the avocado salad and was served a plate of the most beautiful, fresh, heirloom lettucei have ever seen. It was accompanied by an entire avocado, thinly sliced; and a huge pile of Oaxaca cheese. I couldn't believe my eyes, my mouth, and my stomach. I also ordered the chicken tacos; which were actually flautas. Fried to perfection- they melted in my mouth. Best dining experience I've ever had in Mexico.

Breakfast at this place: go for the “enfrijoladas” (unexplainable in english to convince you if I describe it), but that are delicious. You might want to skip lunch after eating them, but worth the calories. You can always do a diet later.
